Andy Serkis Reveals Special Prop He Kept From Lord Of The Rings Set

In a recent interview, The Lord of the Rings star Andy Serkis discusses which prop he possesses from the set and how he came to acquire it.

Gollum actor, Andy Serkis, currently possesses a coveted prop from his time filming The Lord of the Rings. J. R. R. Tolkien’s novels finally received the cinematic exposure deserved after Peter Jackson decided to take on the project over 20 years ago. Serkis, along with a star-studded cast including Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, and many other notable actors, brought Tolkien’s characters and stories to life in a way that had not been done before. The original trilogy was so successful that it presently holds the record for winning the most awards in cinematic history, inspiring further Tolkien-related films like The Hobbit trilogy and upcoming Amazon series.

Jackson's LOTR trilogy follows the expedition of a band of Hobbits and their allies as they attempt stop the rise of Sauron. To do so, The Fellowship has to face a perilous journey through Middle Earth to destroy The One Ring in the fires of Mordor. In the films, Serkis portrays Gollum, a disfigured hobbit who has been corrupted by the ring. Gollum has dual personalities and serves as both a faithful companion and murderous antagonist to the Hobbits. The character’s obsession with the ring ultimately leads to his death and the destruction of it.

It took almost eight years to complete filming the LOTR trilogy. The prolonged time spent interacting with fellow cast members created a strong bond between the actors and the films. Most members of The Fellowship got matching tattoos to commemorate their time on the project. Serkis did not get matching ink like his costars, but he did manage to leave the set with an item just as memorable. During an interview with Tara Hitchcock, Serkis disclosed that he is in possession of Isildur’s Bane, a.k.a, The Ring. Read Serkis' quote below:

"Well, I can tell you that from a very great friend of the director, I was actually given one of the rings from The Lord of the Rings. So, the Precious came to me, and that was a pretty special gift."

The prop clearly holds a large sentimental value to Serkis considering he said it was the best gift that he had ever received professionally. Considering the trilogy’s focus on the item, it is surely a coveted item for many of those who worked on the film. He was a bit vague when alluding to the person who gave him the ring leaving audiences to speculate who the individual could be. However, he isn’t the only actor to possess The Ring. Wood has also admitted to having a ring and has said he believes approximately 10 were made for the films.

It is extremely fitting that Serkis ended up with the ring. In the final moment, the audience sees Gollum happily clutching the item while he falls to a fiery death. Gollum’s obsession with his “Precious” began the first time he laid eyes on it. The character viewed the two as inseparable and believed it yearned to return to him when they were separated. Similar to the events that transpired in The Lord of the Rings, Serkis managed to retain his Precious once and for all.
