LOTR: War of the Rohirrim Image Reveals First Look At Anime Prequel

Get your first look at the upcoming animated film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which has now been set for release in April 2024.

Middle-earth continues to be a hot spot for major upcoming projects as Warner Bros. debuts the first image for its animated prequel film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. More than twenty years after Peter Jackson first brought J.R.R. Tolkien's iconic fantasy world to the big screen, the Lord of the Rings franchise is undergoing something of a creative resurgence. Later this year, Amazon will finally debut its big-budget live-action prequel series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and the recent sale of certain rights within the franchise mean there could be even more projects set within this world on the way.

The War of the Rohirrim was first announced last summer. New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation are producing the project, which is to be directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus). Set 250 years before LOTR, The War of the Rohirrim will focus on the untold story of Helm's Deep, the formidable fortress seen in The Two Towers. It'll also explore the adventures of Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan.

Work on The War of the Rohirrim is still ongoing, but New Line and Warner Bros. Animation have officially revealed a first look image of the film. The concept art reveals a dramatic battle that is breaching the walls of Edoras, the capital of Rohan. Additionally, The War of the Rohirrim has been set for release on April 12, 2024. Based on Middle-earth lore, it seems that the invading army seen here are the Dunlendings, who briefly invaded and claimed Rohan during Hammerhand's reign. As the title suggests, The War of the Rohirrim will center on a major conflict, and this concept art could be showing the very first battle. The movie seems to be taking some of its visual cues from Jackson's films, as Edoras resembles the setting shown in The Two Towers. At the same time, the animated format can allow for a greater level of detail that is harder to achieve in live-action, and there will no doubt be some thrilling sights in The War of the Rohirrim.

With the film not slated to premiere for another couple years, it might be some time before fans get a glimpse at this animation in action. Still, this first look is promising and speaks to the epic era that will be covered in The War of the Rohirrim. Those who have only seen or read the main Lord of the Rings trilogy know a bit about the history of Rohan, but this movie will allow for a deeper exploration that hasn't been possible onscreen just yet. The War of the Rohirrim is getting ready to stake its claim in Middle-earth history.
